From the perspective of most South African athletics spectators, sprinter Carina Horn has flown somewhat under the radar for the last few years, but through hard work and sacrifice she is now knocking hard on the door for World Champs and Olympic glory. – BY SEAN FALCONER I ndoor athletics does not enjoy much coverage or support in South Africa, mainly because we don’t have indoor tracks and thus it is a bit of an unknown entity, but when Carina Horn sets in her blocks in a 60m dash, we should sit up and take notice, because she is seriously fast. At the end of January, in her first race of the year in Dusseldorf, Germany, the 25-year-old won in a time of 7.21 seconds to shatter her 7.28 personal best set exactly a year earlier in Vienna, and bring her that much closer to Wendy Hartmann’s SA record of 16 ISSUE 68 MARCH 2015 / www.modernathlete.co.za Flowers signify another win in European competitio n 7.15. This latest best comes on top of a very successful 2014 season in which Carina improved her 100m outdoor best from 11.59 to 11.17, which moved her from 31st on the all-time SA performance list to fifth!
