PA RT NE R run/walk for life ED IA M RWFL Modern Athlete is proud to be an official media partner of Run/Walk For Life, the organisation with over 30,000 members in 100 branches throughout South Africa, which specialises in getting you started as a walker or a runner, and also has one of the biggest and most active athletic clubs in SA. Spirit of Jozi RWFL Fourways & RWFL Lonehill Ma When Beth Hamman joined RWFL in 2004, she had not done any exercise for years, but soon worked her way up to participating in numerous 10km, 21.1km and 32km races. In August 2010 she took over running the Fourways branch, which today has a healthy 170 members. “Back when I took over Fourways, we were just 15 members. We’re very active in encouraging people to join us. Our road leaders motivate, speak to everyone and we know everyone by name!” The positive trademark of the RWFL philosophy is to get people off the couch, whether it’s just running around the block, walking with friends or going all in for a half marathon. “New members work through a fitness programme until they’re ready to take on the road,” says Beth. “You graduate when you’re fit enough and you can embrace it like you want to – keeping at your speed, whether running or walking, and we prioritise safety and fun, so people keep coming back.” Graduate to Greatness with Two for One Beth also opened the Lonehill branch at the beginning of 2012 and today has around 60 runners and walkers joining her training sessions. “There are a lot of members over the age of 60 that come to us at Lonehill,” says Beth, “and they’re doing amazing things!” Like Lauren Krog, who finished third in the 45-49 age group in the 10km at the SA Race Walking Champs. Debbie Blackburn also clinched third in her age group, while Sandra Atherstone was fourth in the 65-70 age group. The branch also speaks to other disciplines and skills, with Maria Vilakazi
