I’m ready to go for full Ironman in 2016, and I took up stroke correction
lessons with an open water swimming coach in December. This year, I
haven’t targeted anything because my personal project is motherhood – I
will be a first-time mom this June! Eventually, I want to complete a multistage desert race like Atacama or Gobi March, be an Ironman, and tackle
the Great Wall of China, Paris, London and Boston marathons.
MA: Your husband Gugu is not only a rally driving champion and TV
presenter, but also an avid sportsperson. Is it easier having a partner who
‘gets it?’
LETSHEGO: We both understand the amount of training required and we
always support each other. He prefers cycling and I’m more of a duathlete,
soon to be triathlete. Come race day, we’re there. He was supporting me
during Comrades and I was there during his second ABSA Cape Epic, and I
will be cheering him on again this year, too.

MA: What does your training week look like? Do you keep your nutrition in
check?
LETSHEGO: Being preggy, a lot has changed. I do strength training
and running on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I swim on Fridays and ride on
Saturdays. The intensity has reduced, but I will keep at it as long as I
can. When it comes to nutrition, I’ve always been obsessed with keeping
in shape. I understand that it’s an integral part of prep for events. Being
lighter benefits you on the road and I’ve kept below 55kg. There is a need
