ugh Enough To for the ough One? T advertorial Ma They don’t call this race the Tough One for nothing, but each year over 3000 runners take on the challenge, so come and join them for the 42nd running of the RAC City Lodge Tough One 32km & Asics Five on 23 November in Johannesburg. Images: Courtesy organiser T his is a route that is true to its name: Tough, undulating and hilly. You start up Jan Smuts Avenue towards Randburg, which means two big climbs in the first 2km, then it’s more uphill in Republic Road until the drop to Brightwater Commons and Malibongwe Drive. Use the next 2km of steady downhill to catch your breath, then as you cross the N1 highway, the slog to Northgate begins, followed by a brutal downhill in Witkoppen Road. Take a right into Johannesburg North where you climb for 2km to the halfway mark in Robyn Street. Next comes a wiggle through Jukskei Park and across the Klein Jukskei River… and then the race really starts at 18km, with a steady 3km climb through Douglasdale. Forget the six monsters you have already climbed – they were just the warm-up! There is slight relief as you run down Republic Road and into William Nicol before the last slog along St Andrews, then it’s relatively flat back to Old Parks The Tough One starts at 6am at the Old Parktonian Club in Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall. Pre-entries are accepted up to 10 days before the race, late entries will be accepted at the start from 5am, with race numbers handed out the Saturday before the race as well as at the start. The accompanying Asics Five is an official race and starts at 6:30am, and this is a great race for both beginner road runners and track specialists.
