DARE TO DURBAN!
At the beginning of October, 25 finishers out of 26 starters from
the Modern Athlete Dare to Tri Academy crossed the line at this
year’s TriRock Durban event. As one of the first events on the
DTT calendar, it was an opportunity for athletes to test their
hard work and get a taste of competition.

What They Said
Proud Coach!
A word from DTT coach Derick Marcisz
ANNETTE VAN SCHALKWYK
“I came from a cycling background, but never
thought I could run, let alone swim! Trusting coach
Derick and the training programme made it all
come together at TriRock Durban, my first Half Iron
distance triathlon. What a feeling of satisfaction! All
the blood, sweat and tears made it worth it. What a
feeling of accomplishment for myself, knowing I can
do whatever I put my mind to.”
URSULA BAARD
“I really enjoyed the event’s cycle route and I
finished in 6:02, which was faster than my 7:28 at
Ironman 70.3 that I did back in 2011, so I’m really
happy! I hope that I can still improve on this time
in the upcoming months, especially at the Midlands
Ultra this month.”
KEITH KENDALL
“We arrived in Durban to be greeted by strong
winds, rough seas and news that the beaches had
been closed and swimming banned by the city
council! Luckily, race day arrived and there was flat
sea. I settled into a good rhythm and in no time I
was turning at the second buoy to come to shore.
The ride on the M4 out to Ballito and back was fast,
but there were a few nasty hills, especially the last
climb before the turn point. The weather stayed
overcast and drizzled, so it was perfect! Into the
run, the temperature was rising, but the three loops
on the Promenade made everything pass quickly,
as you’re always looking for other DTT athletes in
their distinctive kit. So, TriRock Durban is done and
dusted. Thanks to Coach for getting \
