BE PART OF IT – BAMBA IQHAZA There are so many ways you can be part of the 90th Comrades Marathon celebrations. BE A RUNNER NEWTON’S BIKE IS BACK F rom 1922 to 1927 Arthur Newton won the Comrades Marathon five times, becoming the first multiple winner and the first legend of the race. He was also a distance running visionary, writing a number of books about running, and many of his ideas are still used today. His superb athletic performances aside, Arthur was known as a true gentleman on and off the road, and was well known for always riding his bicycle, which he took with him when he emigrated to England. Now that very same bicycle is back in South Africa. Enter between 1 September and 30 November 2014, but note that entries will be capped at 23,000, and they’re selling fast, so don’t miss out. BE A VOLUNTEER The success of the Comrades Marathon depends on the thousands of volunteers that work across the many portfolios of the race, including registration, marshalling, route, refreshment tables, start and finish, and more. The success of each one of these portfolios relies on the availability of people who volunteer their services to make the event the inspiration that it is. Through this amazing initiative, the charities gain significant resources to effect meaningful change across South Africa.
