Ma Editor’s letter
And then, just as we conquered Camber, having
survived Kili, we arrived at the foot of Everest! Yes,
there was a third and final section of this monster
climb, and I had a momentary sense of humour failure
as I looked up at that Himalayan peak! My calves were
about to go on strike, the sweat was dripping off me,
and it took all my willpower just to keep moving, but
move I did, one slow step at a time, until eventually
I reached the top, where a laughing Terry Ireland of
West Coast AC was waiting to snap some pics of us
emerging from our slow slog up the mountain.
And you know what, soon as I realised the climb was
over, my first thought was damn, wish there was more,
because I had loved every single step of that climb!
There’s no explaining us runners… we just love taking
on the monsters. We even give them names that evoke
pain and suffering, like Heartbreak Hill, and nothing
beats the feeling of conquering a monster climb. Those
hills just make us want to run more, so go find yourself
a monster to conquer this month, and you’ll also feel
like a million bucks!
