Back On Top In Bela Bela

It was a day of comeback wins as
former 5150 Bela Bela Triathlon
champions reclaimed their titles, with
SA’s Kent Horner and Lucie Reed of the
Czech Republic taking top spot on a
warm day in Bela Bela.
In a men’s field boasting former champion
Travis Johnston and upcoming stars like
Wikus Weber and Rudolf Naude, Kent Horner
put in a solid showing to come up trumps
for the first time in the 5150 Bela Bela since
2012. Weber exited the water first after the
1.5km swim, followed closely by Horner,
Johnston, Naude and Namibia’s Drikus
Coetzee. Johnston put in some hard yards in
the windy conditions to move into first place
in the 40km bike leg, but on the way back
to T2, Horner took back the lead. The two
started the 10km run together, but Johnston
started to drop his pace in the second lap as
Horner proved too good and claimed the win
in 1:57:33. Johnston was next home, just
over two minutes later, with Weber rounding
off the top three.

entered T2 with a lead of over three minutes
and then put in the fastest run split to canter
to her first win at Bela Bela since 2011,
crossing the line in 2:17:52, nearly four
minutes ahead of Robertson,
with Grenfell third.
REED DOMINATION
Veteran triathlete Lucie Reed made easy
going of the 5150 Bela Bela Triathlon,
leading from start to finish. She was the first
female to exit the swim, with Kerryn Grenfell
only a second off the pace, but on the bike,
Reed stretched her lead as Riana Robertson,
who exited the water in fifth place, made up
some ground to move up to second. Reed
