South African Athletes on the World Stage
Paarl schoolgirl Gezelle Magerman won gold
in the 400m hurdles at the Youth Olympics in
Nanjing, China in August, in a PB and new SA
Youth record of 57.91. She is the first ever SA
Youth athlete to dip under 58 seconds, and
said after her win, “The best moment of my
life, this medal is so precious, no-one’s going
to touch it right now. I’ll be sleeping all night
with it.”
First Tri win for Matt
Having finished fifth at Ironman SA earlier this
year, Matt Trautman won Ironman Wales last
month, completing the 3.8km swim, 180km
bike and marathon run in nine hours, seven
minutes and 28 seconds. This followed his third
place in the Zell-Am-See 70.3 half-Ironman
in Austria, and continued Matty’s rich vein of
form in just his second year as a professional
triathlete.
