I
really enjoyed some quality time in front
of the television or computer in recent weeks,
watching our track and field athletes in action at the
Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and then the
African Championships in Marrakesh. As I wrote
on page 18, the medals our athletes won and the
PBs or seasonal bests they delivered not only made
for pleasant viewing, but also points to the fact that
despite the problems at boardroom level in the sport in
recent years, and despite the lack of regular top level
meets on home soil, and the financial challenges many
athletes have to face, our athletes are still up there with
the best in the world.
As a fan of track and field, which I believe is one of
the cornerstones of the sport of running but which does
not enjoy nearly enough coverage in our mainstream
media, I am proud of the fact that this magazine has
in the last year given our top athletes some muchdeserved publicity. So you would have read about
sprinters Anaso Jobodwana, Simon Magakwe, Justine
Palframan and Wayde van Niekerk, hurdlers Anneri
Ebersohn and Lehann Fourie, middle distance stars
Elroy Gelant and Gladwin Mzazi, and decathlete
Willem Coertzen, plus we also interviewed Paralympic
sprinter Ilse Hayes.
I am also proud to say that we featured race walkers
Anel Oosthuizen and Mark Mundell in the mag, while
our coverage of trail running has seen us interview
AJ Calitz, Landie Greyling, Thabang Madiba, Kane
