WHAT’S NEWS South African Athletes on the World Stage Rynhardt Rocking Europe Image: Backpagemedia.co.za 800m specialist Rynhardt van Rensburg finished fifth (1:47.59) at the Internationales Sportfest in Rehlingen, Germany on 9 June, then claimed a 1:47.28 win at the Villa de Bilbao Meeting in Spain on 21 June. A week later he was second (1:48.27) at the Meeting International Lotto Cup de Nivelles in Belgium, and then fourth (1:47.27) at the Meeting Sport Solidarietà in Lignano, Italy (8 July), followed by another win (1:48.72), at the meet in Donnas, Italy, on 13 July. Versatile Elroy Gelant was in fine form in the 5000m in recent weeks, winning in 13:26.53 at the iFam Outdoor Meeting in Oordegem, Belgium on 31 May, then claiming another win at the Nijmegen Global Athletics meet in the Netherlands on 11 June, coming home in 13:27.50. A trip to Europe brought two podium finishes on the road for Diana Lebo Phalula as she finished second in 1:13:16 at the Hella Hamburg Halbmarathon in Germany on 29 June, then claimed another second place in 34:39 at the Wiezo Run 10km in Wierden in the Netherlands (6 July). • • • André Getting Faster At the IAAF Diamond League Meeting Areva in Paris on 5 July, André Olivier finished sixth in the 800m in 1:44.42, his fastest time of Ma online AND MORE HIGHLIGHTS • Two Seconds for Diana Elroy Claims Two Wins the year and eleventh on the 2014 world list. A week later he was second at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix Diamond League meet, clocking 1:45.65. At that same meet, Johan Cronje finished fourth in the 1500m, clocking 3:34.97. Mapaseka Makhanya took fourth in the Mattoni Ceské Budejovice Half Marathon in the Czech Republic on 7 June, coming home in 1:15:52. Rantso Mokopane clocked a PB 14:09.30 to finish fourth in the 5000m at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial meet in Szczecin, Poland, on 7 June. Jerry Motsau ran a PB 3:38.24 in the 1500m as he finished second in the meet at Jona in Switzerland on 28 June, having finished fourth in 3:40.40 at the Galà dei Castelli meet in Bellinzona, Switzerland on 3 June. Ryan Sandes was fifth at the Western States Endurance Run 100-Miler in the USA on 29 June, finishing in 15:46:59.
