Just after finishing, a satisfied Ryan said, “I
am really stoked to come away with a second
place. It was an awesome but brutal race, and
my legs had nothing left in the final 40km, so
I had to dig really deep. Watching the sunrise
over Mount Fuji was something very special and
a memory I will never forget. Feet up now and
time to eat some sushi!”

Ryan Sandes finished second in the 168km Ultra
Trail Mount Fuji in Japan on 26 April in a time
of 20:19:08, an amazing feat considering he
won the 125km Transgrancanaria in the Canary
Islands at the beginning of March, and then
went on to set a new record for the Drakensberg
Grand Traverse with Ryno Griesel on the 24th of
March, followed just three weeks later with the
Mount Fuji race. French runner François d’Haene
came home first in 19:09:20, while Mike Foote
was third in 20:54:10.
Six-time Paralympian and veteran wheelchair
racer Ernst van Dyk made history on 21 April
when he became the first athlete to win 10 titles
at the Boston Marathon in the USA. He led from
start to finish to cross the line in 1:20:36, ahead
of Kota Hokinoue of Japan (1:21:14), and set
his second-fastest Boston time after his (then)
course record 1:18:27 of 2004, which stood
as the world record until beaten by Canadian
Joshua Cassidy’s 1:18:25 in Boston in 2012.
collection, which also includes one Paralympic
gold, three silvers and three bronzes, as well as
two World Championship titles as well as a silver
and two bronze medals.
In the men’s main race in Boston, SA’s Lusapho
April was 15th over the line in 2:14:59, just
over six minutes behind winner Meb Keflezighi
(2:08:37). He stayed with the chasing group for
most of the race, but dropped back late in the
race after trying to close on the leaders.
Ernst won the race from 2001 to 2006, and
again from 2008 to 2010. In 2005 he also won
the New York and Paris Marathons, and in 2006
he added the Los Angeles Marathon to his

If you’re not running this year’s
Comrades Marathon, will you be
supporting on the 89km route? If
you’re not in KwaZulu-Natal, will you
be watching on TV?
Wendy-Joy Timmes: “I follow it every
year from the get-go. I’m quite emotional
at all the high and low points, having
done 1 ‘Up’ and 1 ‘Down’ myself. Love and
hate watching the last hour and last few
minutes before the 12-hour cut-off. When
I have a breakaway for church, I still have
my cellphone to track friends via sms.”
Melynda Leigh Ward: “My dad ran his
first when I was 4 years old and I’ve been
supporting every year since. This year will
be my second attempt at it. I’m now 35.”
GV (@GV16i): “I completed my back-toback Comrades two years ago. I will watch
and support this year for sure!”
Warren Bernard (@Run20_20): “I’ll

be watching online from NZ. I will relive
my 2012 run while watching online while
dreaming and preparing for 2015!”
Lindiwe Moeti: “I can’t run this year but
I will be watching from the start with some
hot coffee at home! Maybe I’ll support along
the route in the future.”
Jennifer Joynt: “It would be nice if there
was more TV coverage. We want to see the
back runners as well!”
