This Christmas my family decided
to go camping and since I am
busy training for Two Oceans and
Comrades, I packed my running
gear before anything else! On my
first run, I was privileged to meet
up with another avid runner, and
after running together for a few
days, I learnt that she is seriously
ill. She learnt of her life-threatening
illness after having done her fourth
Comrades, and against all the odds,
she still decided to do her fifth
Comrades three years ago.
Now I feel silly for feeling too tired some mornings to get up and
train. I feel incredibly stupid for complaining about small aches
and pains. Meeting this lady – a wife and mother of two – has
completely changed my outlook on life. We don’t realise how many
of our fellow runners are “in the biggest race of their lives!” My
new friend is even planning to run Comrades 2015. So... the next
time you feel too lazy to train, think of what a privilege it is to be
able to just get up and go! – Margie Bentley, via e-mail
I think we all make excuses not to go for that run sometimes. Just
lace ‘em up and go! – Ed.
