The third annual Unogwaja Challenge took place in the lead-up to Comrades 2013 and nobody who came into contact with the incredible rider-runners and their support crew is ever likely to forget the incredible spirit of the group… and now the team is gearing up for the next Challenge in 2014, and looking for the next team of Unogwajas.
n the 10 days before the Comrades Marathon, 12 intrepid runner-riders wearing red socks and led by John McInroy, cycled some 2 000km from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg, averaging 200km per day, then immediately swapped cycling cleats and helmets for running shoes and caps in order to run the 89km Comrades on the 11th day. And while literally thousands of runners dropped by the wayside in what has been described as one of the hardest Comrades due to extreme temperatures and windy conditions, all 12 Unogwajas made it from Durban to ‘Maritzburg, hand in hand, bouncing, hugging and ‘high-fiving’ their way to the finish in a tremendous show of team spirit and perseverance.
