Further back in the field , couples ran hand-in-hand , friends and coworkers kept each other company on the road , and complete strangers motivated one another when the going got tough . At the finish , the tired but elated runners were rewarded with medals as they swapped stories of conquering " Klapperkop Hill " and conquering the challenging course .
When the final marathoner crossed the finish line after six gruelling hours , the crowd erupted into thunderous cheers and applause . The day was over , prizes were awarded , photographs were taken , memories were stored and the event was put to bed for another year . For everyone involved , watching over 5000 runners successfully complete the legendary event was an inspirational experience .
