One of the highlights of running competitions in a magazine is getting to phone readers and tell them they have won . Well , when we phoned Mirriam , her reaction was priceless . “ I screamed with happiness !” she says . “ I saw the competition advertised on Instagram and decided to enter , and now I am so , so happy . Also , it is my birthday on 17 April , just a few days after the race , so my birthday month is going to be even more special !”
Originally from Springs , Mirriam lives in Sandton with her granddaughter , Mbali , and she has been running since 2003 . “ My late husband passed away in 1997 , and a few years later I decided to take up running , just 5km at a time , to take out the stress of life . Whenever I go home to visit family and friends in Springs , they always say I look so healthy . I tell them , running is my tablet , and I am never sick , thanks to running . I think I am going to keep running till I am at least 80 !”
Mirriam has been to the Two Oceans before , having travelled to the race with her Absa Running Club mates a number of times through the years , both on the train and via bus . “ It was always fun coming down with my clubmates , but this year I am flying down , like the big madam !” Having won two entries as part of the prize , Mirriam was able to give an entry to her granddaughter . “ We both ran the 21km last year , so we ’ re excited to be running the race again this year . I ’ m just going for a finish , and to bring a medal home !”
