International History

On this day … 25 March 1882

Distance running records in South Africa in March are quite rare , but on the world stage it is even more rare . One of the earliest was run on this day in the famous Stamford Bridge Stadium in England . In a 7-mile handicap race , Walter George became the first man to run six miles ( 9.654km ) in under 31 minutes with his 30:49.0 . Over the next few years , George brought the 6-mile record down

to 30:21.5 , and in 1884 set a World Record for the mile of 4:18.4 , before turning professional and taking the record to 4:12.8 in 1886 . The Englishman also revolutionised training methods in the last two decades of the 19th Century , and was the inspiration for the fartlek training method later devised by the celebrated Swedish coach , Gosta Holmer .
