Dis-Chem Does it Again !
The 22 nd Dis-Chem Half Marathon and 5km Fun Run presented by Momentum Multiply was a sell-out race with a fantastic atmosphere as runners took on the scenic but challenging route through Johannesburg ’ s Bedfordview and Primrose areas .
Gauteng ’ s premier half marathon took place on 14 January and once again featured a full-house of runners , with 6500 in the half marathon and another 1000 in the 5km ( which was a timed race instead of a fun run for the first time ). This event is proudly hosted by Bedfordview Athletics Club , and is traditionally a season-opener for many Gauteng-based runners and walkers . It was also a fast race , with the men ’ s winner Onalenna Khonkhobe from Nedbank Running Club clocking 1:05:49 , and women ’ s winner Irvette van Zyl from Hollywood Athletics Club finishing with a time of 1:16:13 – both faster than the 2023 winning times .
The race supports the Lambano Sanctuary for orphaned children with HIV as well as the Namaqua Dog and Donkey Foundation , which undertakes the sterilisation , vaccination and treatment of animals in informal settlements on the East Rand . Thanks to the generosity of runners who made donations , and the
Dis-Chem Foundation , which matched these donations , a total of R35,240 was raised for Lambano Sanctuary , and a further R31,500 for Namaqua Dog & Donkey Foundation , which will be able to sterilise close to 60 animals with this donation .
