The second race in the new four-race Balwin Sport Marathon Series will be the fast and flat Peninsula Marathon in Cape Town on Sunday 18 February 2024 , and remember , all participants of any distance on the day stand to win a fully furnished apartment ! More details below .
The Balwin Sports Peninsula Marathon is one of South Africa ’ s oldest and most iconic races . It was first run in 1964 , when race founder , the late Alex Jones of Celtic Harriers , realised that the distance between Green Point and the Simon ’ s Town was exactly the marathon distance … and since there were few marathons in the Mother City at the time , he did the logical thing and established the Peninsula Marathon . He ran the marathon he founded 31 times and is the holder of permanent # 1 at Peninsula .
The marathon starts at 5:15am in Main Road , Green Point and finishes at the Simon ’ s Town Naval Sports Grounds , with a fast and flat route , but the southeasterly wind can affect your progress – if blowing strongly , it will be your constant

To further motivate participation in the series , runners who participate in any one of the events in the series could qualify to win a fully furnished Balwin apartment . Participants who enter and complete any distance on the day of one of the races and follow this up with a visit to any of Balwin ’ s show apartments at one of its developments countrywide , will stand a chance to win a fully furnished apartment to the value of R800,000 !

The Balwin Sport Marathon Series links four of the country ’ s oldest and most iconic marathons across South Africa for the first time , and will see more than R2 million injected into South African road running annually for the next 10 years . The four races are :
• 11 February 2024 – Jeppe Marathon in Johannesburg
• 18 February 2024 – Peninsula Marathon in Cape Town
• 25 February 2024 – Phobians Pretoria Marathon in Pretoria
• 17 March 2024 – Dolphin Coast Marathon in Durban
companion throughout the race , and it will be coming right at you . Interestingly , the organisers actually tried running the race the other way round in 1984 , to offset the effect of ‘ The Cape Doctor ,’ but Mother Nature responded in kind and sent a galeforce north-westerly wind Cape Town ’ s way instead .
The most popular part of the course is undoubtedly the final stretch of around 15km along the False Bay coastline , with the Atlantic Ocean on your left side and fresh sea air to fill your lungs as you make your way to the finish . You will also have the company of the half marathon runners here , as they start at 7am in Bergvliet , around the halfway mark of the marathon .
Take note that entries close on 8 February , and no late entries or substitutions will be accepted . Free race T-shirts will be given to the first 2000 marathon entrants and first 2000 half marathon entrants . Busses will be available at the finish area to transport runners who have purchased tickets back to the start . No tickets will be sold on race day , so make sure to buy your ticket with your entry .
