The first race in the new four-race Balwin Sport Marathon Series will be the Jeppe Marathon in Johannesburg on Sunday 11 February 2024 , and remember , all participants of any distance on the day stand to win a fully furnished apartment ! More details below .
After some 40 years on the Central Gauteng race calendar , the Balwin Sport Jeppe Marathon has become an annual must-do race for many runners . Besides offering a challenging but scenic course , this year ’ s race will be one of the last opportunities in Gauteng to qualify for the Two Oceans Ultra in Cape Town in March , and also offers a great race for an early Comrades qualifier .
The Jeppe Marathon will also incorporate the Central Gauteng Marathon Champs for 2024 , and running this race will be mandatory for athletes who want to be considered for selection to the CGA team for the SA Marathon Champs , due to be run in Durban in April .

To further motivate participation in the series , runners who participate in any one of the events in the series could qualify to win a fully furnished Balwin apartment . Participants who enter and complete any distance on the day of one of the races and follow this up with a visit to any of Balwin ’ s show apartments at one of its developments countrywide , will stand a chance to win a fully furnished apartment to the value of R800,000 !
The Awesome Foursome
The Balwin Sport Marathon Series links four of the country ’ s oldest and most iconic marathons across South Africa for the first time , and will see more than R2 million injected into South African road running annually for the next 10 years . The four races are :
• 11 February 2024 – Jeppe Marathon in Johannesburg
• 18 February 2024 – Peninsula Marathon in Cape Town
• 25 February 2024 – Phobians Pretoria Marathon in Pretoria
• 17 March 2024 – Dolphin Coast Marathon in Durban
Race day gives athletes a little bit of everything : A tough 42km or 21km ( one lap of the marathon ), as well as a 10km race and a 5km fun run around Senderwood . The marathon course is a two-lapper around Bedfordview and Edenvale , starting off with a tough first 10km that features several inclines before the halfway mark , but it ’ s the downhill past Gillooly ’ s Farm in the last stretch that everyone looks forward to . Just don ’ t get carried away , because the last kilometre provides a nasty little uphill pull !
The official cut-off for the half marathon is 3.5 hours , while marathon runners will have six hours to cross the line .
Take note that entries in the marathon and half marathon are limited to 6000 runners across the two events , while a total of 3000 can be accommodated across the 10km and 5km events . Entries will close on 31 January , or earlier if the entry cap is reached before then , so rather enter early if you want to run this classic . Even better , enter before 30 November and you will qualify for a discounted Early Bird rate . Take note that no late entries will be taken .
