Cacisile Sosibo on her way to a PB in the women ’ s half marathon
Glenrose Xaba was our second 21km female finisher
The women ’ s half marathon performances were also of high quality , led by Cacisile Sosibo ’ s PB 1:09:31 in 10th , cementing her fifth place on the all-time list ( with the 22nd-quickest time ). Only Elana Meyer , Dominique Scott-Efurd , SA Champion Glenrose Xaba and Colleen de Reuck have run faster . In the 5km , Maxime Chaumeton led the race in the first few kays and eventually finished 17th in 13:36 for third on the SA all-time list , with SA champion Nicholas Seoposengwe 38th in 14:19 . SA women ’ s champion Tayla Kavanagh was 15th the women ’ s 5km in 15:50 , placing her fifth on the all-time list ( with the 13th-fastest time ), while Kyla Jacobs was just one place behind in 15:51 . Both times are PBs . In the shortest race of the championships , Ryan Mphahlele was 6th in the men ’ s mile in a PB 3:57.35 , and Carina Viljoen 15th in the women ’ s mile in 4:39.01 ( also a PB ).
A Huge Success
The next edition of the World Athletics Road Running Championships will take place in 2025 in San Diego , USA , and given the overwhelmingly positive feedback on this first edition , both in terms of the new distances and mass participation opportunities , World Athletics is already predicting an even bigger turn-out next year . Meanwhile , the elites are just as enthusiastic about the new format . In fact , women ’ s half marathon winner Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya has even suggested that the 10km distance also be added to the event . “ We used to not have championships on the road , just for the half marathon , but now it ’ s more special ,” she said .
