The Ed ’ s Desk : Mid-race Rave
While doing commentary at the recent Thirsti AFRICANX Trailrun , I saw something I had never seen since my first AFRICANX in 2011 , and I think it was largely down to the frustration of the past year . – BY SEAN FALCONER

WALKING SECTION l u m n
Running for the Babies
Three friends from Cape Town tackled a 100km road run – further than any of them had ever run before – to raise funds for a non-profit that looks after abandoned babies , and they took their sense of humour with them . We spoke to the intrepid trio of Angelo Adams , Esmund Van Wyk and Merlin Galant about their run , and we also have a humorous ‘ race report ’ by Angelo . – BY PJ MOSES
Kalmer ’ s Corner : First Things First !
I recently ran my first race in more than a year , and it turned out to be a day full of firsts for me , including one most unexpected bonus . I think I ’ m going to like being a veteran after all ! – BY RENÉ KALMER
Spinning Out of Control
With a total of 24 marathons and eight ultra-marathons to her name , Annalie Rich has really enjoyed her running career over the last decade-plus , but an inexplicable problem with vertigo and dizziness almost forced her to hang up her running shoes for good . This is her story , from crying in the shower in dejected frustration , to returning to the road with a new positive outlook . – BY SEAN FALCONER
The Running Mann : It ’ s a Jog , not a Sprint
Due to the lockdown , I have not been able to get my usual marathoning and travel fix in for a while , so instead I ’ d like to talk about how lessons learnt in running can be applied to the world of business . – BY STUART MANN
Safety First , Views Second
With most road races cancelled or postponed due to the pandemic , some runners have run actual race routes in order to still get the ‘ feeling ’ of their favourite races . This saw four of us travel to Cape Town to tackle the Two Oceans Marathon route this past Easter , but we found out exactly why the organisers had warned runners not to do so ! – BY DUANE NEWMAN

Tokyo Ticket Booked
Just one second … That ’ s how close it was , but race walker Wayne Snyman has got that all-important Olympic qualifying time behind his name , and booked his seat to Tokyo later this year . – BY WILHELM DE SWARDT & SEAN FALCONER
Walk This Way : Choosing Change
Trying to put my decision to retire from race walking into words proved much more difficult that I imagined , so , let me start with one of my favourite quotes : “ When in doubt , choose change .” – BY ANEL OOSTHUIZEN
