or on the trails or on
the farm roads. Good
thing you disappeared
very quickly when you
finished the event,
because you WOULD
have been named and
shamed. – Paul Kelly,
Cape Town
I’m not in favour of
naming and shaming,
because I prefer the
#runclean campaign
to be about getting
everybody on the
same page about
environmental
responsibility, but
sometimes I can’t
help but wanting to
also point a finger....

swelling, plaster cast, moon boot, crutches... but six months of recovery
later I was back on the road. Slowly I built myself up from battling to do a
5km to doing longer distances – I had to start from scratch!
In 2016 I managed 450km for the year. In April 2017 I met a group of
people I could run with in the
mornings and doubled my
mileage to 1134km. I decided
2018 would be my year to be
great! I ran just under 2000km,
finished my first marathon in just
under five hours, and smashed
every record I had to date.
BACK ON THE ROAD! 2019 has not been as great a
year for me so far, having suffered
some loss of mojo, but I do aim
to run more marathons this year,
with 2020 being my 40th year and
first year to do the Two Oceans
Ultra. Great dreams can come
true when you put your mind to it.
And I have been blessed to meet
great people in running. – Tanya

Wow, I love reading Modern Athlete! The story in the Feb edition about
Hester Bekker finishing the Comrades at 65 blew my mind! There is still
a chance for me. In August 2015 I was knocked over by a taxi during a
race, just over 1km away from the finish. Three broken toes, damaged
ligaments, surgery, 10cm long pins, some screws, a lot of bruising and Inspiring words, Tanya, and all
the best for keeping things going
in 2019 as you build up to the big
year in 2020. – Ed.
