or on the trails or on the farm roads. Good thing you disappeared very quickly when you finished the event, because you WOULD have been named and shamed. – Paul Kelly, Cape Town I’m not in favour of naming and shaming, because I prefer the #runclean campaign to be about getting everybody on the same page about environmental responsibility, but sometimes I can’t help but wanting to also point a finger.... – Ed. swelling, plaster cast, moon boot, crutches... but six months of recovery later I was back on the road. Slowly I built myself up from battling to do a 5km to doing longer distances – I had to start from scratch! In 2016 I managed 450km for the year. In April 2017 I met a group of people I could run with in the mornings and doubled my mileage to 1134km. I decided 2018 would be my year to be great! I ran just under 2000km, finished my first marathon in just under five hours, and smashed every record I had to date. BACK ON THE ROAD! 2019 has not been as great a year for me so far, having suffered some loss of mojo, but I do aim to run more marathons this year, with 2020 being my 40th year and first year to do the Two Oceans Ultra. The story in the Feb edition about Hester Bekker finishing the Comrades at 65 blew my mind! There is still a chance for me. In August 2015 I was knocked over by a taxi during a race, just over 1km away from the finish. Three broken toes, damaged ligaments, surgery, 10cm long pins, some screws, a lot of bruising and Inspiring words, Tanya, and all the best for keeping things going in 2019 as you build up to the big year in 2020. – Ed.
