or the past few years, East Rand Plastics has made a massive
contribution to promoting environmental awareness and responsible
environmental practice through its Garbie division, by sponsoring
free cardboard bins and plastic bin liners for running events all over South
Africa.
East Rand Plastics is one of Africa’s largest manufacturers of refuse bags,
from light duty household to heavy duty garden and industrial bags, and
all are manufactured using recycled materials to promote the protection
of our delicate environment. Thus the company was already offering the
sponsorship of bins and liners to running events before Modern Athlete
launched its #runclean campaign, but when the company heard about the
campaign, it approached the magazine with the offer to do a joint venture,
thus taking the campaign to still more races and an even wider audience,
and spreading the greening message still further.
This campaign has seen Garbie deliver thousands upon thousands of bins
and liners all over the country, amounting to a massive financial sponsorship
that has hugely benefitted the running sport and its community.
Garbie’s sponsorship campaign has now ended,
but on behalf of the running community, Modern
Athlete would like to say a huge THANK YOU to
Garbie and East Rand Plastics – and we would like
to encourage all South African runners to buy Garbie
products. Next time you are in the shops to stock
up on refuse bags or bin liners, look for the Garbie
logo, and support the company that has supported
us runners.
