ADVERTORIAL Another Dis-Chem Done The dust has now settled after the 18 th running of the Dis-Chem Half Marathon, hosted once again by Bedfordview Athletics, and what a remarkable run it was as the first half marathon of the year for many runners! M ore than 6500 athletes participated in the half marathon, whilst the Centrum 5km DASH saw close to another 1500 at the starting line. The organising team would like to congratulate all who participated in this prestigious event, especially those who chose this to be their first half marathon ever! We again had the full support of all our sponsors, the organising committees and contractors, our volunteers and marshals, and of course all the families and friends who supported on the day. Without these people this event would not be possible. The highlight of this year’s race had to be the women’s record being broken by Irvette van Zyl in a time of 1:14:51, which also gave her a 10 th place overall standing! In the men’s race, first place went to Philani Buthelezi in a time of 1:08:43, beating last year’s winner Lucky Mohale by 1 minute 20 seconds. More than R50,000 in prize money was awarded between the different categories, whilst many spot prizes of running shoes, clothing vouchers and Biogen and Transact product hampers were handed out to lucky participants. Greening & Charitable Efforts Bedfordview Athletics and the Dis-Chem race committee have made a commitment to ensure that the race has a minimum impact on the environment, hence our #Runclean Policy. The committee ensured that there were sufficient refuse bins all along the route and on the field. All refuse was collected by Funky Bins Waste Management, who issued a Recycling Certificate stating the following items were collected for recycling: • 16 bulk bags of plastic water sachets • 24 bulk bags of cardboard • 10 bulk bags of plastic bottles The Dis-Chem Foundation once again pledged to match all donations made by entrants over and above their entry fees to the events’ beneficiaries. The Namaqua Dog and Donkey Foundation thus received a donation of R27,420 and the Lambano Sanctuary received R30,500. This charitable initiative also encompasses the essence of what the Dis-Chem Race strives to achieve in the community. So whilst the first half marathon of the year has been run, the training programmes are now going full steam ahead for those braving the marathons and ultras to come. From Dis-Chem Pharmacies and Bedfordview Athletics, we wish you all a great year of running, whatever your goals may be, and we look forward to seeing you next January for the 19th Dis-Chem Half Marathon!
