T
his premier KZN race has grown in stature over its four years, with 8500
participants in 2018 making the most of the great weather, full closure of the
M4 highway, spectacular ocean views and superb water points. Also, the
race date moved earlier this year, to offer runners an ideal Comrades qualifier, and
this proved a popular move. This event is known for its exceptional water points,
and Race Director Barry Holland
says, “We believe we set the
standard for top race water points,
and we put up a substantial prize
for the best overall point and best
first half point. The teams went all
out, but best overall point went
to Remax Dolphin Coast, with
the first-half prize going to Living
Earth.”

s the sound of a single gunshot rang out loud, some 6000 athletes took to the
roads of Middleburg, heading for the finish at the Forever Resort at Loskop
Dam, in one of the biggest and best ultras in SA. Up front it was veteran
Charles Tjiane (Maxed Elite) who led the field home in 2:54:11, while the women’s title
was convincingly claimed by Charne Bosman (Nedbank), who also claimed both the
open and veteran titles thanks to her
3:21:45 finish. The accompanying
21,1km Wild Challenge is often
described as a tougher challenge than
the 50km ultra, and saw more than
1000 finishers this year. First home
was Musa Nkosi from Easyequities
Born2Run in a solid 1:12:19, while
Anishia Fryer won the women’s race
in 1:33:33.

his year’s race was the best yet in its eight years! The day started
with a crisp wind, but this did not dampen the spirits of the 4000

m any runners went home
with a surprise gift, thanks to
there being close to R80,000

grabs at prize-giving. On the
competitive side, the half
marathon line honours went
to Moelestsi Moletsane from
