Join Our CLUB I f you want the enjoyment and camaraderie that comes with being a part of a club, then the Modern Athlete Club is for you. Our club operates largely in a virtual environment in the Central Gauteng (CGA) and Gauteng North (AGN) running provinces, but it has a real presence at events and through club functions. And as a bonus, by joining our club, you will get free entries to selected partner races! MEET THE MA MEMBER Name: Garrith Joynt | Age: 50+ From: Mayfield Park, Johannesburg Family: Married to Jennifer, and they have a daughter, Robyn (21) When did you start running? I became pretty fit during National Service from ’85 to ’87 when a bet with some mates got me running track and half marathon races in Potchefstroom – and I think those “vasbyt experiences” always stayed with me! My first long races Most memorable running moments? Running the Soweto 21km with my daughter two years ago. We finished in 2:40 and in good condition, and Robyn managed a PB at the 10km mark. Also, running consecutive Comrades with Alan Smith, finishing the Up Run in 9:48 and Down Run in 9:30. Your running goals? I want to run more with my family. I find this most rewarding, especially when they achieve their goals! Also to stay healthy and injury-free, and build up a solid platform so I can get back up to speed again. Anything you’ve learnt from running? Running is a good way to test oneself competitively, and a great way to make new friends with a similar passion for life. JOIN THE MODERN ATHLETE CLUB! Think before you throw - #runclean M odern Athlete’s #runclean campaign calls on all runners to stop littering during races, because the mess left behind by runners dropping water sachets or cups in the road has become one of the most prominent talking points in South African running circles. APPLY FOR FREE GARBIE BINS FOR YOUR EVENT While many runners have already stopped littering, some continue to just toss their used sachets on the road, or worse, far from the road, even when dustbins are provided along the route! And it’s so easy to carry an empty used sachet for a kay or two until the next water table or to a dustbin, or putting it in a pocket or your waistband and discarding it at the finish. It will not weigh you down or slow you down, and there really is no excuse for littering! To qualify for the free bins, events must put the #runclean and Garbie logos on their entry form and race/club website, and must promote the #runclean message on all their platforms as well as at their event. We therefore suggest events apply for bins well in advance, so that requests can be processed in time and the bins delivered, and so that organisers and clubs can meet the simple requirements as their part of the deal. Further to this, as part of the #runclean campaign, the Garbie brand (East Rand Plastics) is providing FREE fold-up cardboard bins and plastic bin liners to registered #runclean events, and any running or walking event held in South Africa can register via the link on www.facebook.com/runclean, or go to http://modernathlete.co.za/bf.php?fid=287. Once an event is registered and approved, Garbie will arrange the delivery of the bins, liners and bags, all free of charge, and Modern Athlete will promote the event through our various platforms. Share your #runclean efforts or experiences at www.facebook.com/runclean or mail to [email protected]. 38 ISSUE 101 DECEMBER 2017 / www.modernathlete.co.za were the RAC Tough One and Soweto Marathon.
