STRONGER TOGETHER
By Erin Lazarus
Let’ s rewind to 2022. Freshly amputated, my doctor suggested in-patient rehab and my immediate response was:“ No thanks!”
The idea of sitting in a room, trauma-bonding with other amputees, felt like my worst nightmare. So for over a year, I kept my distance, convinced my journey was mine alone to navigate with family and friends.
Then I attended an Össur mobility clinic, and everything changed. Instead of sadness, I found laughter, practical advice, and people living full, beautifully normal lives. No trauma bonding, just shared wisdom: clever tricks, honest stories, and proof that life doesn’ t end after limb loss. That day, I stopped being an island and found a community.
Fast forward to 22 February 2026, standing at the start line of the Balwin Pretoria 5km race beside seven amputees. I was an emotional wreck. Overwhelmed with pride, joy, and gratitude. Each person carried a different story, yet together we showed that mobility looks different for everyone.
The race became about far more than distance. It was about showing that mobility looks different for everyone, that disability does not mean limitation, and that strength grows through connection. We don’ t need legs to cross finish lines, we need each other.
Mobility is not a privilege; it’ s a right. And together, we prove that life is lived with strength, pride, happiness, and community. My heart has never felt happier.
To all amputees who saw us, come join us. To anyone living with disability, come join us. To anyone who is too scared to start, come join us. This is for all of us. Let’ s celebrate mobility and go get our medals, together.
