HYROX
2 MINS
Cape Town, the countdown is on!
There are less than 100 days to go until the next HYROX event on South African shores and yes, finally, we can present a two-day event showing the growth of both HYROX and Fitness Racing! Cape Town, buckle up and get ready: HYROX will be in your city on the 19th and 20th of July 2025. Cameron Cleaver lets us in on what to expect.
While tickets haven’ t gone on sale yet, I can guarantee that they are going to sell out fast; if you aren’ t following HYROX’ s social media pages, I suggest you pause reading and head over there now and get over now— particularly if you plan to compete. Seasoned athletes and newbies alike are already chomping at the bit to purchase their tickets and start their training ASAP.
For me, the most exciting thing about HYROX now being held over two days is that you can race multiple times over the weekend. I don’ t know the category order yet but I’ m holding thumbs that I can race Men’ s Pro Singles on the Saturday and Doubles / Mixed Doubles + Relay on the Sunday!
HYROX continues to grow in popularity and is very much seen as the pinnacle of global fitness racing. But the lack of feasible year-round racing domestically seems to be a bugbear for most athletes. Let’ s hope that, in the near future, other SADC countries, including Mauritius, will pick up HYROX racing and add some calendar events that are closer to home.
If you want my advice on training, I’ d suggest that you start a threemonth training block with running to build endurance, strength and conditioning; closer to the time you’ re going to want to fine-tune those HYROX movements. With more than 100 HYROX-affiliated gyms nationwide, including chains like F45 and Planet Fitness, there really isn’ t an excuse— especially once you have your Cape Town race ticket!
I am really looking forward to seeing the match-ups in Cape Town. Danél Louw and Vicky MacIntosh could square off in the Women’ s Pro Singles race, while there may be some interesting head-to-head action in the Men’ s Pro Singles race: Kyle Schoonbee back to defend his JHB victory, and both Wesley Henning and Leon Manders consistently improving. And, if I’ m fit and healthy I’ d like to throw my hat into the ring and try to give the youngsters a tough time for at least part of the race!
Meanwhile, there are lots of South Africans training for World Champs in Chicago during the second week of June. I’ d like to wish every one of them the absolute best: go show the world what the Saffas are made of!
