GET THE LOOK

For my ‘Get The Look’ video, I have chosen to talk about the 1930’s, 1940’s and the 1960’s. I created this video using short clips of film of myself styling outfits that I believe have been inspired by each of these eras. Although the footage filmed is silent, I have inserted a voice over for each era that includes me talking about and explaining the outfit I have chosen to style and how it relates to each decade. In the background of my video I have also inserted a song (Friends by Francis and the Lights feat. Bon Iver) so that if there would not be any moments where the video was silent and therefore the video would be more interesting to watch.

I chose to look at the 1930’s due to the glamour that the era held. From the inspiration of Hollywood films and actress and actors adorned in the most beautiful outfits, a new way of dressing was born. Ladies of the decade wanted to look like their favourite actress and did this by dressing themselves in lavish faux fur, elegant dresses and reams of pearls. I admire this era as although the Great Depression had hit the world in the most devastating way, people still found a way out of it and this was expressed through their clothing. The 1940’s also inspired me as this decade was hit by World War Two and this meant that fashion changed drastically. Due to fabric rationings, dresses became much shorter than we had seen in any other decade and styles changed too. I chose to style an outfit that I believed had been influenced from this decade as I think that if it wasn’t for the 40’s and the forced change in what people wore, fashion would not have changed for a long time. Therefore I believe that this era had one of the biggest impacts on fashion. The 1960’s was the last era that I chose for my video. I chose the 1960’s due to the huge change in styles and the massive impact events from this decade had on fashion. Rebellion in this decade against consumerism and society caused subcultures such as mods and hippies to be born and this created a whole plethora of new fashion trends which is what I find the most interesting.

The impact each decade has had on fashion has influenced what our fashion is like today and the styles we wear on a daily basis. The 1930’s has impacted how we interpret fashion from films and celebrities and how that then influences the styles we choose to wear. Faux fur which was very popular in the 30’s has recently become very popular and I believe that this was influenced by Hollywood glamour from this decade. The 1940’s has had a huge impact on fashion and how we use fabric today. Due to the rationings and style changes caused by the war, fashion had to change which had a further impact on decades post war and how fashion was looked at. Today, we can still see styles from this decade such as shirt dresses, trench coats and tweed jackets. The rebellion of the 1960’s has had a huge impact on fashion today because it allowed individualism to grow, influencing new styles and new trends. One of the biggest creations of the 60’s was the introduction of the mini skirt from the famous designer Mary Quant. This skirt became so popular and has not disappeared off of the fashion scene since and is still seen on the high street today.

Overall, I believe that my video has informed the viewer on fashion and events that have influenced fashion from my three chosen eras and how they have impacted fashion today. The clothes that I chose to style for each era were my choice due to how I thought that they reflected the fashion of the chosen decade. If I were to improve upon my video, I would have done 2-3 outfits per era. I believe this would have then further informed the viewer and would have enabled them to see more styles from the decade. This may have made the video more interesting to watch.
