Step 3
Using MIG Pigments P023 Black Smoke, P033 Dark Mud
and P034 Russian Earth, I mixed a dark blend. I once again
used the MIG fixer on the lower half of the hull and the road
wheels. Using my old brush, I applied the pigment mixture
to the above stated areas I used the fixer on.
Step 4
In this step we will be matching the weathering of the
lower hull, tracks and the front and rear of the vehicle as
well. To do this you will use the same three step approach
you used for the lower hull and road wheels. It is key to
use the same colors to match your weathering from area
to area of the model. Making sure that, as in the pictures,
you maintain the lighter to darker ratio when weathering
the remaining areas of the vehicle.
Step 4
Continuing the weathering on the rest of the hull
Step 5
Using the same color mixtures from steps 1 through 3,
we are going to change the technique slightly to add
the pigments to the kit. This time add the fixer to the
pigment mixture itself. Using a large old brush load the
brush with the pigment/fixer mixture and flick it on the
vehicle leaving a splatter effect.
Step 6
On top of the front fenders, I sprinkled a dry mix of
pigments in the same color blend. Taking a large brush, I
dipped it in the pigment fixer and touched the edge of the
fenders, letting capillary action take place. This will take
care of the rest of the job. It is important to note in this
step that I do not touch the wet brush to the pigments. I
let the fixer flow freely and allowed it to “surround” the
sprinkled-on pigments. This is to avoid the “flattened”
look and instead gave me more structure to the mud.
By following the steps outlined in this tutorial, you will
be able to add weathering to a stand alone model or
help blend a model into a diorama base. MIG Pigments
are available through many distributors, as well as direct
Step 5 & 6
Adding mud splatter to the hull and fenders
from MIG Productions. As with any new technique, be
sure to practice first on an older model or scrap piece
before applying it you’re newly finished model.
