As a producer of high quality figures your time must
be limited. Do you ever have a chance to just build and
paint a miniature for your own enjoyment anymore?
For me, I do not separate “there are figures for
a job” and “there are figures for enjoyment”,
because I’m making every figure as if it was for
myself. But, I try to find free time for dioramas. It
is my real passion and enjoyment – hobby for the
soul, free from business, no limits or deadlines.
Sculpting figures takes time and preparation…
prepare, prepare, prepare…. And finally, one day,
you can make an interesting scene with them! It’s
just cool to get to a logical and creative finish to
the long process, when all of the small parts are
working together like one living organism.
There are many aspiring sculptors in our hobby. If you
could give them one piece of advice what would it be?
First, every aspiring sculptor must say to himself,
“I do not make FIGURES. I am making a PERSON.”
Little people, with their own lives, history, and
emotions. Try to tell this story within your sculpture.
Try to avoid making uniform mannequins.
And secondly, make sculptures “from Generals
to Civilians.” Of course, wrinkles, pockets and
buttons are very important, but the soul and
essence of the sculpture are something else!
We at Model Builder International would like to
thank our friend Vladimir Demchenko for taking
time out of his busy schedule to speak with us.
