Modern Peasant is among the trends that
trend bureau SPOTT profiles for the Spring/
Summer 2021 season. NU interviewed trend
researcher Anja Bisgaard Gaede about fashion
trends for next summer, and she outlines
four important overall themes that she calls
Modern Peasant, Body&Soul, BAISC, and Millennium.
MODERN PEASANT
Modern Peasant draws inspiration from the
Amish people and their primitive way of life,
valuing things such as craftsmanship, tradition,
deliberation, and simplicity. Simple looks
and natural colours, including natural white
as a new neutral colour, are signs of this inspiration.
Delicate yellowish browns inspired
by cornfields, dusty light blue, and khaki are
also important colours, while textiles are often
adorned with crocheted or embroidered
details. Broderie anglaise as well as linen,
bamboo, and patchwork are some of the popular
choices of fabric. If synthetic textiles
are used, it is typically in items that express
tradition and history in their styling. Effects
such as patchwork and crocheted details
are often used instead of prints. The Modern
Peasant clothing is simple and unicoloured
or tone-on-tone. Colour graduations à la dip
die are also used for effect.
In terms of individual items in this trend, we
are going to see lots of dresses and knitted
shawls as well as bonnet-like bucket hats as
protection against the sun. Overall, there is
an underlying “Little House on the Prairie”
vibe to this trend. Shirts and tunics with voluminous
sleeves are common expressions
of the style, and frills, layered dresses andfrill
skirts also dominate the “pretty & practical”
style. Knitwear remains significant, not just
in the form of knitted sweaters but also knitted
dresses, vests, and so on.
If you want to give the theme a modern twist,
you can combine heavy and light textiles into
new variations, such as wool and tulle or leather
and lace. And if you want to bring the
idyllic peasant life to the next level, you can
twist the theme into a “casual peasant” look
with peasant shirts and materials such as
cotton and jersey for a casual look.
The theme is also relevant for children’s fashion
with things such as Peter Pan collars
on shirts and dresses and a focus on neutral
and subdued colours. You can almost see it:
healthy and peasant children, photographed
in yellow cornfields.
The whole theme is thoroughly commercial
for both adults and children because it taps
directly into the contemporary spirit and its
focus on overconsumption and a need for
simplicity and self-imposed asceticism.
