Another approach to sustainability which Levi’s adopts is their ‘Screened Chemistry Program’. The program is set to eliminate harmful chemicals from their supply chain.

Not only does Screened Chemistry restrict substances and screen every formulation, but it is used as a method to find alternatives for that chemical and get rid of hazardous chemicals before production begins.

The Screened Chemistry approach has been a success for the brand and has been adopted by 20 of their suppliers already- including one of their labs in San Francisco which is already fully based on this program. Along with their water-saving strategies, Levi’s is keen in sharing this program with other companies for the same reason- a more sustainable industry.

Additionally, a more traditional technique in sustainable fashion (but still significant); ‘Old denim gets a new life’. The brand has partnered up with RE/DONE and brought customers a collection called

‘Levi’s Authorised Vintage’ – the range created from re-cycled/up-cycled and pre-loved jeans.

By doing this, the brand are encouraging one-of-a-kind garments and are promoting the use of second-hand wear which would save an estimated 65% of water which would have been used to grown cotton for another pair of jeans.
