The cumulative net domestic box-office collections for Hindi films released in
the calendar year 2012 were `2,420 Cr, up 42% from 2011. The industry is set
to touch the `3,000 Cr mark in 2013 & for an industry of this scale and growth
rate, it is essential to understand the behaviour of the consumer.
• 81% of first-?day audience of Hindi films are males.
• 63% of BO revenue comes from 15-?29 yrs. Age group.
• Their contribution goes up to 74% for first-day BO.
• The north multiplex markets (Delhi, Gurgaon, Punjab) have a stronger
picnic/ outing outlook to movies than the rest of the country.
• Film reviews don’t influence the youth, who would rather believe friends
than reviews.
• But 30+ respondents are influenced significantly by reviews, and trust them
more than their friends’ view.
• Action ranks no.2 amongst males but no. 8 amongst females.
• Aamir Khan & Vidya Balan emerged as no.1 & 3 respectively in Quality
Conscious Classes (QCC) audience segment & a strong pairing yet
unexplored in Bollywood.
• Money spent on film hoardings is largely a wasteful investment.
• Print ads emerge as the strongest source of new film awareness for 30+
audience, but score below music channels and the Internet for the youth.
• For a sizeable section of young audience, music is more important than the
genre/story theme of the film
• Sony & Colors emerged as film audience’s most watched channels
• Family comedies and social message films unite various audience across
India, emerging as common choices for men and women, young and old
metros and small towns.
