FEATURE — OUR TASMANIAN ESCAPE
BE PREPARED FOR ANY WEATHER
It should come as no surprise that Tasmania in the winter is frigidly cold . Antarctic winds charge across the Southern Ocean , dumping heavy rains and snow across the state . But the cold weather isn ’ t isolated to the winter months . It ’ s not uncommon to get below-zero temperatures , even in summer , in the alpine regions .
Be prepared for any conditions no matter when you visit . Pack warm clothes , wet-weather gear , and if your van doesn ’ t have a diesel heater stock up on lots of blankets .
DON ’ T BE AFRAID TO TRAVEL IN WINTER
Travelling in the summer here is pleasant and beautiful , with all of the activities , businesses and parks open to make the most of the tourism boom . Summer is also the busiest time though , and if you don ’ t mind a bit of cold weather it ’ s worth heading across the Bass Strait in the off-season .
During winter you ’ ll find many of the most popular destinations completely empty , and the landscapes take on an entirely different feel when there ’ s a fresh blanket of snow covering the state . What you miss out on in beach days , you ’ ll make up for with highlights such as Cradle Mountain and Bruny Island without another soul around . So grab that down jacket , throw some snow chains in the van and make the most of Tassie ’ s most underrated season .
