FEATURE — OUR TASMANIAN ESCAPE
PENGUIN
The entire north shore of Tasmania is filled with quaint , picturesque villages and undulating coastline , longing road trippers to stay a little bit longer than expected . From Devonport to Stanley there ’ s a lot to see and do , so make sure you clear your schedule as your wind your way west .
Along the way you ’ ll find the cute town of Penguin , which , as the name suggests , is home to a small population of fairy penguins . Walk around the streets to grab a selfie with the penguin statues before parking up at one of the beachside free camps just outside of town ( if you ’ re self-contained ).
Once the sun sets , head out for a walk with a red light to spot the gorgeous birds coming to the shore to nest for the night . You may even hear them squawking underneath your van as you doze off to sleep - a pretty special , if somewhat loud , experience .

SWIMCART BEACH ( BAY OF FIRES )
The Bay of Fires is arguably one of the most visually stunning places in Australia , with its lichen-covered granite boulders , white-sand beaches and clear waters that shimmer so blue you ’ d think you were in the Whitsundays instead of Tasmania .
You won ’ t find a shortage of epic beaches that make up this sensational coastline in northeastern Tasmania , but our personal favourite is Swimcart Beach - home to quite possibly Australia ’ s best free camp .
You know those Instagram posts that state # WokeUpLikeThis , with the van doors open and nothing but empty sand between the vehicle and the sea ? This is literally what Swimcart Beach is like . Depending on conditions you can sneak in a surf , hike to different beaches or simply kick back with a drink in hand and chat with the other lucky travellers who have found this oasis as well . And with a time limit of 28 days , you don ’ t need to be in a rush to pack up and leave either .
