JOURNEY TO THE GEOGRAPHICAL CENTRE OF THE SIMPSON By Amanda Markham , TravelOutbackAustralia . com
“ Are you sure we turned off at the right star picket ?”
If ever we ’ d wanted a taste of what the first European explorers had experienced entering the trackless expanse of the Simpson , this was it . Hours after leaving the French Line , we bumped along between the dunes , crawling slowly north , scanning the red-ochre sand for even the faintest hint of vehicle tracks .
Our nerves were buzzing : were we mad , doing this kind of trip ? Had we made a mistake ?
Just after morning tea , we ’ d found the star picket marking our departure point from the French Line – the famous and now incredibly popular eastto-west track that crosses Australia ’ s best-known desert , the Simpson . We ’ d turned north at the innocuous metal dropper , heading off-track and cross-country on a quest to see one of Australia ’ s most remote and difficult to access places : the geographical centre of the Simpson Desert .
