3 . The Pound Walk , Ormiston Gorge , West MacDonnell Ranges . This has to be the best walk in the West Macs . After a stunning 3 – 4- hour hike you finish up crossing a permanent waterhole . It was waist deep , icy cold , and filled with dead fish when we did it in winter , but still the most fun we ’ ve had on a hike .
4 . Finke 2 Mile Big Gum Free Camp — a peaceful riverside camp with stunning scenery , inquisitive bird life and incredible sunsets . This is our favourite camp in the West Macs , so much so that we based ourselves there for five nights .

We spent more time than planned in Alice Springs because of border closures and lockdowns , but once given the all clear , we hightailed it down to South Australia via Mt Dare . The roads had been closed due to recent flooding and we were some of the first to drive on them once they reopened . These roads are , at the best of times , pretty rugged , let alone after a flood ! The most brutal roads we have ever been on were in outback SA between Mt Dare and Oodnadatta . It took us seven hours to do 160km ! These roads made the Oodnadatta Track feel like a highway .
