exclusive interview THE SKIN CARE EXPERT MMIA What’s the one thing you wish you knew when you started out? KIMO I wish I had the knowledge to better equip myself to cover a larger market. Digital media is so powerful and I just didn’t know how to market myself, get the word out about my business, or share how I was changing lives one doorstep at a time. “In 10 years, if you ask me if I have any regrets I would say ‘YES! I wish I had stepped out on faith a little sooner’.” Kimo Bentley Founder & CEO of Kimo Bentley Brooklyn, New York Kimo Bently has spent the last 17 years perfecting her skills in skincare and body rejuvenation. She started her career at Bosley Medical center as a hair transplant technician working with many celebrities and later went on to study esthetics to gain knowledge in the techniques and in skin rejuvenation. 16 | Subscribe at mmiamagazine.com MMIA What part of your biz are you most passionate about? KIMO I am most passionate about the results I get from my customers and how the knowledge I put in them changed their lives. For me it’s not just about selling creams, soaps, and lotions; it’s more about the knowledge. Knowledge is powerful. Even if someone decides not to use my products, at least they have the knowledge of what to use , why, and the benefits of its use. The very foundation of my business was built on results, passion and love. All of my time is spent on community projects “building my block and shaping my world.” MMIA How do you balance the roles of entrepreneur and mom? KIMO As a divorced mother of two I have to wear many hats: the mom, the teacher, the counselor, the best friend, the daughter and the business woman/ entrepreneur. Balance comes with time management and that was key for me as a young child. I have always written everything down and I plan my day down to the minutes. Being a mom was so easy for me so when I started my business my children where always a part of it. MMIA How do your children feel about mommy being an entrepreneur? KIMO My children are my biggest fans. They believe in our brand and understand how it has not only changed their lives, but also the life of others who are near and dear to them. My children often call themselves my personal PR firm lol. I remember very recently my youngest daughter (who was 8 years old at the time) told me she hooked me up with a contract and expects to be paid at the end of the agreement. It was the funniest thing, but she took it seriously. Kiara already has the passion inside of her. She is not afraid to speak about the business and what we have achieved as a family. Kiara closed that deal by the way --it was an outdoor vending opportunity for a party of 100 people and yes she was paid. Items you can find in my line or even in your local health food store. I cannot say it enough; I love what I do. MMIA What are your views on moms becoming entrepreneurs? KIMO I tell all moms to go for it! Find your “aha” moment then perfect it and build on it. Use your gifts and skills to build a brand. Believe in what you are doing. Be consistent, persistent and hungry. My mindset was Kimo; there was no plan B because my plan A was guaranteed to work. In 10 years, if you ask me if I have any regrets I would say ‘YES! I wish I had stepped out on faith a little sooner’. Kimo Bentley Twitter & IG: @Skincaremogul October/November 2014
