STEPHANIE: I have been working in the industry for a very long time, about a decade. I choose to go into business for myself one year ago. MMIA: Take us through a typical day in your life. MMIA: How long did it take you to go from business idea to actually seeing income? STEPHANIE: The idea has been with me for many years. I have worked as a hair stylist in salons for about 8 years before stepping out and actually becoming a business owner. MMIA: Do you ever regret your decision to become a full-time entrepreneur? STEPHANIE: There are moments of doubt, frustration, and discouragement. But never regret. This is what I have dreamed about. Not many people can truly say that they have taken steps to make their dreams a reality but I can and I appreciate it very much. The legacy that I am building for my son is worth it. MMIA: How do you balance the roles of mommy and entrepreneur? STEPHANIE: It’s rough at times. They both are very demanding. But mommy comes first. I have enlisted assistance for both: being a mommy and entrepreneur- overall time management is key. MMIA: How do your children feel about mommy being an entrepreneur? STEPHANIE: • Wake up call: About 6am • Get my son ready for school • Drop him off to school • Go to the salon • Work for about 8-9 hours • Pick son up from after care • Drop him off to my sister home • Sometimes go back to work for 1-2 hours • Pick him up-go home • Homework/Dinner • Bedtime This repeats throughout the week MMIA: What’s your advice to working moms who are on the fence about becoming an entrepreneur? STEPHANIE: You can do it! It comes with its challenges. Scheduling and to-do lists are a must. It also takes a village. Having help with your child is essential because there will be times when you have to put in some long hours. If your children are old enough, make them a part of the journey. They can be your first assistants. Definitely educate yourself as much as possible. Become a mentee and learn. That is a great way to help you grow as an entrepreneur. Nonetheless, you can do it. It will show your children that they can also go after their dreams. STEPHANIE: My son sometimes wants me to be home more often. When we can just have fun time. I did sit him down and have a talk with him about my work and why it is important that I work.
