I had to ask some uber-experienced and talented colleagues of mine - Lucky Bromhead and Melissa Street - what their thoughts were on such trends .
Lucky says , “ There ’ s a time and place for all styles of makeup . In most cases with makeup artists on IG , that time and place is 3am in a drag club . Something I will never understand is the desire for “ sameness ”. Makeup should be about personal expression and highlighting your own uniqueness . On IG the trend seems to be about a mask that makes everyone look alike . The great thing about IG as a professional makeup artist ( ie : someone who does makeup on faces other than solely their own ) is that it ’ s a great tool for networking , exposure , and building a community . That said , being famous on Instagram won ’ t necessarily book you work in the real world .”
Agreed ! Social media is a tool that most of us working in the industry did not have access to in the past , so put the powers to good use !
When I asked Melissa Street about how this might effect her as a working professional she says , “ The “ fake up artists ” on social media sites like Instagram don ’ t seem to be making any sort of negative impact on my business as a freelance makeup artist for television and film however , what they are doing , in my opinion , is giving makeup tips and techniques that are incorrect . They also seem to be influencing people to wear a ton of makeup that the average person does not need to wear or invest in and in reality , the looks they teach are not appropriate for the average consumer or everyday woman / man . No one should feel they need to wear a ton of makeup in order to feel beautiful ”
Freedom of expression is what I ’ ve based my career on . It ’ s what I live for . But creativity and originality seem to be on the verge of extinction ; it ’ s no longer a creation from our own minds . “ Beauty ” no longer feels human and I find myself longing for the days of yesteryear , the pre-excess days . I ’ m thankful to be able to turn on a tutorial on and learn something new , as there is no shortage of talent on social media . But these sometimes helpful forums seem to be turning us into a flock of well sculpted sheep . The purpose of this piece may be a ambitious one : It ’ s one of hope for originality and passion . Be you , do research ! And don ’ t always take social media as truth . Anyone can be who they want to be on social media including the paid people flooding your Instagram with false ideals and edited photos . To the ladies and gents who aspire to be makeup artists and that I will one day work alongside , Do yourself a favour and stop limiting yourself to what is shown to you . In the end , you will limit yourself to a career that exists only on Instagram .
