NCAA: Creighton Holds Off Syracuse for NCAA First Round Win

NCAA: Shockers Come Up Short in First NCAA Tournament

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - McKenzie Fujan scored a career-high 24
points as Creighton held off a late Syracuse rally to beat the
Orange 61-56 and earn its first NCAA tournament victory since
1994.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A dream season for the Wichita State
University women’s basketball team came to close Saturday
afternoon at Reed Arena as the host Texas A&M defeated the
Shockers, 71-45, in WSU’s first-ever trip to the NCAA Women’s
Basketball Tournament. The 14-seed Shockers traded 11 leads
and six ties with the 3-seed Aggies before TAMU pulled away.

After trailing by 10 points with less than five minutes remaining,
Syracuse had a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer in the
final seconds, but Elashier Hall’s shot hit the right side of the rim.
Creighton’s Sarah Nelson added two free throws with .03 left.
Kayla Alexander, the leading scorer in Syracuse history, had 23
points and eight rebounds for the Orange (24-8), the No. 7 seed
in the Oklahoma City Regional. Carmen Tyson-Thomas added 13
points for Syracuse, which was seeking its first NCAA tournament
victory.
Fujan shot 6-of -0 from 3-point range for Creighton (25-7) and
had 17 points by halftime. Nelson added 17 points and Marissa
Janning had 10 points.
Fujan entered the tournament averaging just 9.3 points, but she
had scored a career-high 22 in a Missouri Valley Conference
championship game loss to Missouri State and carried that momentum over to the NCAA tournament.
The junior guard shot a sensational 6-of-7 overall and 5-of-6
from 3-point range in the first half. She scored her team’s first
11 points.
Creighton didn’t get a point from anyone else until Alyssa Kamphaus made a free throw with 6:46 left in the first half. The first
Creighton basket from Fujan’s teammate came when Carli Tritz
sank a 3-pointer with 3:31 left in the half.
Although Creighton entered the day ranked second nationally
with 9.3 3-pointers per game, the Bluejays weren’t hitting anything until Fujan started shooting. Creighton missed its first eight
3-point attempts and 11 of its first 12 shots overall.
Nelson had 14 of her 17 points and Janning scored all 10 of her
points after halftime as Creighton finished 11 of 36 from 3-point
range. Creighton also outrebounded the taller Syracuse team 4335.
Nelson’s 3-pointer gave Creighton a 55-45 lead with 4:54 remaining, but the Bluejays wouldn’t make another basket the rest
of the game.
Syracuse switched to a player-to-player defense and got within
57-56 on Tyson-Thomas’ layup with 19 seconds left. Fujan hit
both ends of a 1-and-1 to make it 59-56 with 16 seconds remaining. The Orange still had a chance to tie the game before Hall’s
shot was off the mark.

Wichita State ends the year with a 24-10 record, setting the
school mark for overall victories. The Shockers also recorded the
first regular season and first conference tournament championships in school history.
Kingwood, Texas native Michelle Price led the Shockers with 12
points on 4-of-5 shooting, while making her third start of the season.
The last of the lead changes in WSU’s favor came with 7:45 to go
in the first half when a Chynna Turner layup put the Shockers up
20-19. Turner finished with eight points and four rebounds while
shooting 4-of-7 from the field.
