teams in the NCAA Tournament. The tournament field has
expanded from 32 (1982-85) to 40 teams (1986-88) to 48
teams (1989-93) to 64 teams (1994-present).

Tournament Field

The field for the 2013 NCAA Tournament will consist of 64 teams,
with 31 teams getting automatic bids by virtue of winning their
league championship. The remaining 33 teams will be selected
by the NCAA Women’s Basketball Committee.
The Missouri Valley Conference is one of the 31 leagues whose
tournament champion receives an automatic berth.
