NOTEWORTHY

• SIU enters its first season under head coach Cindy Stein, a veteran with 27
years coaching experience, including 16 as a head coach. Stein was hired
on April 3, 2013, becoming the 10th head coach in program history. Stein
previously turned around struggling programs at Missouri, Emporia State
and Illinois Central College, and she looks to do the same at Southern.
• Junior guard Cartaesha Macklin enters the 2013-14 season just 40 points shy
of 1,000 for her career. She has scored her 960 points in 61 career games.
She could potentially become the second-fastest player in school history to
reach the 1,000-point milestone behind Sue Faber (1979-83) who scored
her 1,000th point in her 60th game. Macklin scored 495 points in 2011-12
and 465 in 2012-13. Both of those totals rank in the top 10 in SIU history
for points in a season.
• Sophomore center Dyana Pierre became just the third player in Missouri
Valley Conference history to lead the conference in rebounding average as
a freshman last season. Pierre pulled down 277 boards for an average of
8.9 per game. She joined Angela Buckner (2000-01) and Wanda Ford (198383) the only players in Valley history to lead the league in rebounding as a
freshman. Pierre’s 277 rebounds is tied for sixth in SIU history for a single
season.
