2013-14 Men’s Basketball Preview by Quinn Zielonko Active cAreer LeAders (entering the 2013-14 season) The 2012-13 Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball season will go down as one of the most successful in league history. For the 17th time and first since Indiana State in 1979, an MVC member danced all the way to the Final Four, invoking memories of the “Hick from French Lick” and his Sycamores’ unforgettable run. This time, however, it was names like Early, Hall and Marshall that told the story, and the nation watched it unfold, as the Shockers “Played Angry” and soared all the way to Atlanta. Because of this historic accomplishment and several other notable performances last year, expectations for Valley hoops are high again in 2013-14. As the MVC moves forward into yet another highly anticipated season, league members will look to further improve upon the high standard established over the course of the past few years. 1,146 - Walt Lemon Jr., Bradley 1,122 - Jake Odum, Indiana State 735 - Seth Tuttle, UNI 605 - Jordan Prosser, Bradley 564 - Deon Mitchell, UNI 453 - Keith Pickens, Missouri State 432 - Chip Rank, UNI 394 - Nathan Scheer, Missouri State 393 - Christian Kirk, Missouri State 3-POINT FGs MADE Walt Lemon Jr. of Bradley is the league’s active leader in scoring with 1,146 points. He was a second-team all-MVC pick and all-Defense Team selection in 2012-13. more post-season bids in the same season 19 times, including each of the last ten years. After Selection Sunday, Valley members continued to showcase why the MVC is arguably the most marvelous mid-major conference in the nation and did so in historic fashion. On their way to the Final Four, Wichita State defeated several notable opponents, including Pittsburgh and No. 2 seed Ohio State, and also, perhaps most impressively, they upset No. 1 seed Gonzaga, marking only the fifth time in the history of the NCAA Tournament that a No. 9 seed had defeated a No. 1. Post-season records were set in 2013 for most total wins (13) and most NCAA Tournament wins (5), breaking the mark (12) previously established in 2011. In the past nine years, The Valley has combined for 63 post-season victories. Indiana State’s Jake Odum is one of two returning first-team all-MVC selections from a year ago (Cleanthony Early, WSU). Regular-season results were also staggering in 2012-13, as the MVC produced a 94-50 record against non-conference foes, demonstrating the depth of the league. For the first time in the league’s 106-year history, all teams won six or more conference games and 10 or more games overall, illustrating remarkable competitive balance throughout the MVC membership. 82 76 75 63 52 43 - Nathan Scheer, Missouri State Chip Rank, UNI Walt Lemon Jr., Bradley Lucas Eitel, Indiana State Jake Odum, Indiana State Deon Mitchell, UNI FREE THROWS MADE 414 235 202 137 120 112 - Jake Odum, Indiana State Walt Lemon Jr., Bradley Seth Tuttle, UNI Deon Mitchell, UNI Keith Pickens, Missouri State Marcus Marshall, Missouri St. REBOUNDS 504 474 428 347 319 259 233 218 201 - Jordan Prosser, Bradley Jake Odum, Indiana State Seth Tuttle, T??V?F??6?V?2??76?W&?7FFP?v?B?V????"??'&F?W??6??&???T?6?&?7F????&???76?W&?7FFP?'??6wfV???Wf?7f???P?FV?V?R6?GF???v?6??F7FFP??$??4?0?CP?C0?C?C?#??# ?????V?F??6?V?2??76?W&?7FFP??W7F??v?B???F??7FFP?v?B?V????"??'&F?W??6WF?GWGF?R?T???R?GV????F??7FFP???R??F6?V?????F??7FFP??5DT?0?c????R?GV????F??7FFP?CB?v?B?V????"??'&F?W??cR?FV???F6?V???T?c2?6WF?GWGF?R?T?S???V?F??6?V?2??76?W&?7FFP?S??FV?V?R6?GF???v?6??F7FFP??#2?B&Wf?Wp??G&V?V?F?W2W?V7WF???BF?RF???bF?R6??fW&V?6R6??&??VBv?F?V?VW7F???&?RFWF??2&?f?FVBF?P?g&?Wv?&?f?"?V?F??R?7B?6V6???V&?6W2???#"?2?6??FV?0?&V6?VB?7B?6V6?????"?4????B?24?B??F?W26??F?g???rF?R6??F??6??6V7WF?fR?V"F?BF?Rf??W??@?6???"??&RFV?2????r7B&6???F?W72?F?R?d2?2?Bf?W"? ??44?$??r?F?F????G2???54?5E0?CC????R?GV????F??7FFP?#C2?v?B?V????"??'&F?W???2?FV???F6?V???T??b?6WF?GWGF?R?T??"??V?F??6?V?2??76?W&?7FFP???FV?V?R6?GF???v?6??F7FFP?7FG2F???B??6?VFR6&VW"F?F?267V?V?FVBB&Wf??W266????2?#p??
