MVC All-Sports Award History WICHITA STATE TAKES ALL-SPORTS TROPHY Wichita State was the 2012-13 Missouri Valley Conference all-sports champion. It marked the seventh crown in the past 10 years for Wichita State, which has a league best 19 all-time. Wichita State finished in the Top 3 in 14 of the 15 sports it sponsors (with softball the lone exception). The Shockers won four team championships (women’s basketball, women’s indoor track & field, men’s golf, and women’s tennis) and finished second in eight others. The All-Sports Trophy is based on a school’s average finish in each of the sponsored championships by the Missouri Valley Conference. Teams are awarded one point for first, two for second, three for third, etc., and the total accumulated points are divided by the number of sports in which a particular school competes. Finishes in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball are based on regularseason competition. All other sports are determined by finish at the championship tournament or championship meet. Wichita State set a record with its aggregate score last year (2.300). Either Illinois State, Missouri State or Wichita State, meanwhile, has earned the league’s all-sports championship trophy every year since 1995. EVANSVILLE EARNS LEAGUE’S ALL-ACADEMIC AWARD In 2012-13, for the second-straight year, the winner of the league’s All-Academic Award was the University of Evansville. League faculty representatives first recommended the All-Academic Award in hopes of recognizing institutional academic excellence, and the MVC Joint Committee quickly took its lead to establish this prestigious award. The conference academic excellence award is based on the average studentathlete grade-point average for the academic year. GPA calculations are calculated for all student-athletes in MVC-sponsored sports who compete, practice or receive athletic aid during the academic year. VALLEY’S PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD NAMED FOR ISU GREAT LARRY BIRD Men’s and women’s basketball Player of the Year awards are linked to two well-known names synonymous with college basketball and The Valley. The Valley’s men’s basketball Player of the Year is named for men’s basketball great Larry Bird, while the female Player of the year accolade honors former Missouri State star Jackie Stiles. Honors 196 The pride of French Lick, Ind., Bird was the national college Player of the Year in 1979 while leading the Sycamores to a 33-1 record and the championship game of the NCAA Tournament. A two-time consensus first-team All-American and twice MVC Player of the Year, he finished his career with 2,850 points and 1,247 rebounds. He went on to earn three NBA Most Valuable Player awards and lead the Boston Celtics to three NBA titles. In 1996, he was tabbed one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. Bird, a charter member of the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame, graduated from ISU in 1979 as the fifth-leading scorer in NCAA history, and he currently ranks No. 3 on The Valley scoring charts. He’s also No. 4 in career rebounds in The Valley, joining Oscar Robertson as the only two players in league history to rank in the top five on both lists.
