NCAA Tournament - St. Louis, the Host During the tenure of Doug Elgin, The Valley’s ninth and longest-tenured commissioner, The Valley has been aggressive in hosting NCAA events in St. Louis. That role came to a spectacular climax in April 2005 as the conference collaborated with local partners to stage the Men’s Final Four at the Edward Jones Dome. The Valley has helped bring 10 NCAA events to St. Louis since 1998, hosting men’s regionals in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2007 and 2010; a men’s first/second round in 2002, the Women’s Final Four in 2001 and in 2009, and the Men’s Final Four in 2005. Creighton and The Valley co-hosted a men’s basketball first/second round in 2008 in Omaha. The MVC hosted a second/third round in Kansas City, Mo., in 2013, and will host a second/third round in St. Louis at Scottrade Center in 2014. The 2009 Women’s Final Four, hosted by the MVC and the city of St. Louis, marked the fifth Final Four in the history of the city, including three men’s event (1973, 1978, 2005), plus the 2001 Women’s Final Four. The 2009 Women’s Final Four was the third NCAA Final Four in that decade in St. Louis, following the 2001 Women’s Final Four at Savvis Center (now named Scottrade Center), and the 2005 Men’s Final Four at the Edward Jones Dome. Beginning with the 1998 NCAA Midwest Regional, and culminating with the 2010 NCAA Midwest Regional, the city of St. Louis hosted nine NCAA basketball events in a 13-year span. In 2012, Saint Louis University hosted an NCAA Midwest Regional in St. Louis. YEAR-BY-YEAR HIGHLIGHTS OF ST. LOUIS EVENTS Post-season 172 2012 -- In the Midwest Regional final, Kansas scored the last 12 points to win, 80-67, while the top-seeded Tar Heels missed their final nine shots and 14 of their last 16 attempts -- after shooting 63.6 percent in the first half. The Tar Heels escaped Ohio in overtime in the regional semifinal, 73-65, while Kansas edged North Carolina State in its semifinal game, 60-57. Thomas Robinson of Kansas was named the Midwest Regional Most Outstanding Player. The Edward Jones Dome (right) has been the site for the past seven NCAA men’s basketball tournament events in St. Louis, including a 1999 Regional, a 2002 1st/2nd Round, a 2004 Regional, the 2005 Final Four, a 2007 Regional, a 2010 Regional, and a 2012 Regional. In 2010, MVC member UNI held a half-time lead over Michigan State, but the Spartans rallied to win 59-52. 2010-- For the first time in league history, the conference hosted a men’s event with a league representative as UNI represented the Valley in the 2010 Midwest Regional in St. Louis.
