The Light of The World By: Diane Gammill Jesus said in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” So, if Jesus is the “light of the world” why is there so much sin and evil in the world? Isaiah 59:2 has the answer: “your sins have hidden His face from you.” God has not hidden His face from us; but “sins” have hidden His face from us. Because of sin, people cannot see Christ nor the works of Christ. They see the sin rather than Christ and His light. However, Jesus is still the light of the world. Sin may try to stamp out His light, blow it out with words of worldly wisdom, put it out with the cold water of guilt and shame, and snuff it out with presuppositions and explanations of the unordinary. But Jesus is still the light of the world. He still shines His light on the hungry, lost soul to salvation. He still shines His light on the alcoholic and drug addict to break the chains of bondage. He still shines His light on the sick to heal and on the captive to deliver. He still shines His light to strengthen the weary and encourage the oppressed. Praise God! Jesus is the light of the world—always has been and always will be. As long as the earth exists, Jesus is the light of the world. Some may claim to walk in His light but they walk in the darkness of sin and confusion. As we walk in the light of Jesus we experience the light of life. We experience His love, mercy and grace daily because we have relationship with Him. Jesus is our Lord and we talk to Him, listen to and obey Him as He leads us through this light of life because Jesus is the light of the world.
