The Arts and Crafts Village was created in 2003 by the National Council for Arts and Culture
(NCAC) after being used for an exhibition for the Commonwealth heads of Government Meeting.
It’s not uncommon to see artists creating in the village however many of the pieces are created
off-site or sourced from local artisans across the country. These include sculptural works,
traditional home furnishings, decorative carved masks and jewellery made from various types

of precious stones, wood and bones. Other common items on display are currency. These are
banknotes and coins that haven’t been used or seen for years, many dating back to the days
when the country was still under colonial rule.
In early December 2017 the Village was nearly consumed by a fire that left much of the artowrk
destroyed. The artists soon proved their resilience and the shops are coming to life once again.
